General

Q: What is an LED?
A: A light emitting diode is a tiny semiconductor that shines a light when electricity passes through it. While LEDs can output different colors, we offer professional LED light structures with a white gleam.

Q: How long do LEDs last?
A: Most LED lighting products have an average rated life of 25000-50000 hours. This is dependent on factors like heat management, type of fixture, continuous run time per day etc.

Q: What are the benefits of using LED lighting?
A: While LED fixtures are generally more expensive upfront, they are highly efficient, using less energy than incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen lights. LEDs will yield you massive savings in maintenance and replacement costs. They also do not require a start-up time and will turn on instantly with full brightness when switched on.

Q: Do LEDs contain mercury?
A: No, LEDs do not contain mercury.

Q: Do LEDs emit ultraviolet or infrared light?
A: No, LEDs do not emit UV or infrared light.

Q: What is a heatsink?
A: A heat sink is used to absorb heat from the LEDs. While LEDs emit the least amount of heat, keeping them cool preserves their long-lasting performance.

Q: Can I use a dimmer with my LED light fixtures?
A: Yes, Hykolity LED high bays and troffers are compatible with 0-10V dimmers. Watch the video below to learn more about 0-10V dimmers:

Q: What's the difference between your two beam angle reflectors?
A: Hykolity polycarbonate reflectors disperse light at a 70° angle for a concentrated output. They also give our LED UFO high bay lights a traditional appearance. Our aluminum reflectors disperse light at a 100° angle, giving off a wider spread and a more modern aesthetic.

Q: What is the operating life of your LED lights?
A: Hykolity LED lighting fixtures last at least 50000 hours, which is effectively about 23 years at 6 hours a day.

Q: The wattages are lower than other types of fixtures I’ve looked up. Are your LED fixtures less bright?
A: No. Wattages are a measure of power consumption, not brightness. To compare brightness between fixtures, look at their number of lumens.

Q: What are lumens?
A: Lumens are a measure of light output or the total amount of visible light and is the specification you should look at when shopping for brightness. A higher lumen count means brighter light, while a lower lumen amount means a dimmer light.

Q: What does 4000K or 5000K mean?
A: This tells you the color temperature of the LED light, which is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the number, the warmer the light appears. The higher the number, the cooler the light appears. Learn more by reading our color temperature guide.

Q: Are my LED fixtures water resistant?
A: In many cases, Hykolity commercial grade LED fixtures are rated for damp location use. Check your product's spec table to see where you can use them. If you can't find what you are looking for, contact our customer service department.

Q: What does it mean for a product to be DLC-certified?
A: The DLC (DesignLights Consortium) is an organization that evaluates the lighting efficiency of fixtures. If a lighting product earns a certification, the DLC considers it an energy efficient light and can be eligible for rebates and incentives.

Q: How can I find out if I can get a rebate for my LED fixtures?
